Open the file tool

Select the online target in Devices and open the file tool in its details. Once connected, check the current path before opening the directory you need.

The tool shows the remote device's filesystem. Downloads save files to your current computer; uploads write local files to the target. Check the direction before starting.

Download and upload

  1. To download, locate the file, choose Download and wait for completion. Check your browser's downloads afterward.
  2. To upload, first open the destination directory on the remote device, then select a local file.
  3. Wait for progress to finish, refresh the directory and check the filename and size.
  4. Before replacing a file with the same name, check the existing contents, keep any needed backup and follow the overwrite prompt.

Use the current tool's displayed transfer and archive limits. If the browser or device disconnects, check whether the file was already written before retrying, to avoid extra copies.

Read and write access

File read permission allows directory listings and content reads. Uploading, creating, moving, renaming or deleting also requires file write permission and access to the directory under the target operating system.

Desktop access does not grant permission to change every directory. When requesting access, explain the directory and action you need so an administrator can grant the relevant permission.

Let AI handle files

In Chat, specify the device, directory and expected result. For example: “List the PDFs in my working directory without moving or deleting them.” Review the list before requesting changes.

MCP limits a single text or binary file body to 1 MiB. Before overwriting, read the file's SHA-256 and pass expected_sha256 to detect intervening changes. Use the file page or a supported dedicated client for large files. See MCP setup.
